January 20

We’ve been seeing this guy hanging around in the alfalfa field for the past couple of days. He’s a hawk of some kind, but I don’t know which one. If you know, please leave a comment!

A Hawk in SE Oregon

He came in close enough today to get an OK photo, but the 20x zoom and cropping still doesn’t do him justice. The wing span is huge!

This is the first sign that spring is on it’s way…it’s a long way off for us here on the high desert, but the sage rats (a ground squirrel) start coming out of hibernation as early as February. I think this guy is hoping for a meal.

Here he’s sitting on a fence post watching the field, but other times that we’ve seen him, he’s been on the ground above a mound of dirt which is the home of the sage rats.
