It was a dull, cloudy day…Rastus brings a bit of color (and a smile) to the photo! Happy Friday!
Last week I spent two days at Crowley ranch gathering and moving pairs. Fall is when most ranchers gather their pairs from summer pasture, sort the mamma cows from the calves then ship the calves to auction yards. Yes, the clouds were threatening rain, but we were lucky this time.
The cow boss usually runs three border collie cow dogs at a time. I can only handle my one! It was great fun and can’t wait to go back in the spring to help turn out the newborn pairs to summer pasture…and the cycle goes on and on…
The long awaited day arrived…the pups get new toys for their basket; the toy basket was gettin’ mighty sparse! Rastus is pretty darn happy here! They’re our kids you know!
And, I’m playing with my new “toy”…a new to me (used) Rebel xsi with 4 lenses, tri-pod, macro lenses…etc…I’m now on a huge adventure (with a big learning curve)!
Rastus needed to have some fun today, so we went out and played with the cows. He had a blast of course! The lighting was terrible, and I fixed this as best I could in Elements.
When I do action shots, I use the “action” mode on my PowerShot which allows me to take consecutive photos. I’ve still yet to master handling the dog and the camera at the same time 😉
From working horses to working dogs…it’s lots of work…but lots of fun!
I stopped at Tom Blasdell’s TufStockdog training facility before going home to have a lesson with Rastus. I can’t work a dog and take photos at the same time…I hope to get good enough to do that someday! So, I took some shots of Tom working one of his dogs.
We’re on a road trip! Twice a year I attend a bridle horse clinic for three days. So, I packed up two dogs and a horse into the living quarters horse trailer and made the four hour trip to Tumalo Oregon.
Rastus is obviously settled in for the evening in his cozy bed! The dogs love camping out with me in the trailer. Cindy Sue (aka The Princess) sleeps up in the bed with me!
WhoooHoooo! 100 down and only 265 to go! I truly am enjoying this Photo a Day challenge. Thank you to all of the folks who drop in, press like, leave a comment, or just view…I hope my photos bring a bit of joy into your day.
Today I walked down to the cow paddock to check on Number Three. She’s our first year heifer that we’re still waiting on to calve (with rolling eyes as my husband and I discuss her every day). We’re 99.9% sure that she’s pregnant…but the bull was in with the girls until September…an error on our part….so we just don’t know when. We just wish she’d hurry up and get on with the delivery!
Since I only went to “look” at the cows, there was no real “job” for Rastus to do…but he stared at the cows the whole time waiting for me to give a command to go left or right to flank them. I finally said walk up…and he took a few steps…and then pointed. I couldn’t help but laugh at him!
Bless his lil’ heart…he oh so much wants to work a cow…ALL THE TIME!!!
